“American Dream”.
We had accomplished what many dream of - what we once dreamed of - but something was missing: Freedom. The comfortable existence we had built was a gilded cage: a web of professional and financial obligations pushing and pulling from all sides, binding us to Atlanta, as Gulliver was to the Lilliputian sand.
Our careers, though fulfilling, prevented us seeing the world or being “off the grid” in all but the most abbreviated sense: two weeks here, a few long weekends there and that’s all, folks! The rest of the time, it was off to work again for the three-thousandth time, mostly to enrich others.
One spring evening, Crosby Stills & Nash’s “Southern Cross” came up on the playlist, and its lyrics lead Kendal down the internet rabbit hole to figure out just what the hell was a “reach” and a “following sea”... and how did sailing work anyway, etc. This inevitably lead to YouTube, and to our realization that selling everything, buying a boat, and sailing it off was well within our capabilities.
So we made a plan: learn to sail on Lake Lanier, GA, and start looking around for a seaworthy boat, a process we expected to take months and lots of travel. But Lady Luck must have smiled on us, as a gorgeous Tayana 37 just happened to hit the market, right there on the lake! It also happened that one of the sailing school guys knew the boat & owner, had sailed her extensively, and said he’d take her anywhere in the world. This was just the inside scoop we needed; Kendal put in an offer that night, and here we are!
In the succeeding months, we sold or got rid of all our possessions, quit or went part time with our jobs and trucked Avignon to Florida, where we lived aboard and refit her with all kinds of upgrades and gear. We did final prep and provisioning in West Palm Beach before setting off into the Blue.
No regrets.
